Why Flying with a Cheaper Airline Might Cost You More Than You Think
Choosing a budget airline may seem like a smart move initially, but the hidden costs can quickly add up, turning what seems like a bargain into an expensive ordeal.
Our recent flight with #CONDOR from Edmonton to Frankfurt was chosen because it offered a direct route, saving us the hassle of layovers and long wait times. As retirees, my partner and I were grateful that our son generously purchased the tickets for us. However, what we didn’t know was that the low ticket price came with several hidden fees that we only discovered later.
Firstly, no luggage or hand luggage was included in our tickets. We paid extra for two single 23kg pieces of luggage, asking the #CONDOR help line to please book one 23kg piece of luggage from Edmonton to Frankfurt and the other for our return flight. However, when flying back from Frankfurt to Edmonton, we were informed that we had to pay an additional CAD $150 for the same suitcase we had already paid for. Despite showing proof of payment, the @CONDOR agent insisted on the extra charge.

Frustrated, when we arrived back in Edmonton, we contacted #CONDOR’s helpline and requested a refund for the overcharges, but our request was declined. We were advised to submit an online claim, but so far we have not even received an acknowledgment of our online claim.
Additionally, when we first received our booking details, most of the seats were already reserved, forcing us to pay extra for seat selection. #CONDOR even offers the option to reserve overhead space for hand luggage, yet another fee we hadn’t anticipated.
In total, the additional charges for luggage, seats, and other fees amounted to CAD $711.93. While our son offered to cover these costs, we couldn’t accept after he had already paid for the flights. This means that we paid $711.93 for two seats and one 23kg suitcase to Frankfurt and one suitcase back!
To make matters worse, the in-flight meal was subpar, adding to the overall disappointment.
Next time, we’ll ensure that any flight we book includes hand luggage and doesn’t come with endless hidden fees. For now, I’d rate @CONDOR a 4 out of 10.
